As the worlds of luxury and technology converge, a new wave of innovation is making its mark in the yachting industry. Cryptocurrency is becoming a preferred payment method and offers boat enthusiasts and travellers alike a modern twist on traditional payment methods.
As companies embrace this digital revolution, they observe a growing clientele seeking the convenience and flexibility that cryptocurrency transactions provide. This not only enhances the customer experience but also signifies a pivotal moment in how high-value items like superyachts are bought and chartered, paving the way for a new era of luxury travel.
Setting sail
Cruising the open waters provides a sense of freedom, and similarly, the speed and convenience of using cryptocurrency are attractive to both retailers and customers. With low fees, quick settlements and easy cross-border payments, digital currencies offer distinct advantages over traditional payment methods, especially in an industry often hindered by long payment delays and high costs.
In many cases, transactions involve a broker, an escrow agent, and a seller in different countries, complicating the payment process. By using cryptocurrency, both brokers and customers can benefit from enhanced payment security, seamless transactions, and smooth conversions to fiat currencies. This level of convenience is refreshing in the yachting industry and facilitates a smoother, more efficient transaction. The added security provided by cryptocurrency payments gives peace of mind to all parties involved, ensuring that transactions are reliable and protected.
The 0.1% Group is a luxury travel concierge and has recognised crypto’s advantages of convenience and privacy.
“Paying with cryptocurrency for yacht charters offers benefits such as lower transaction fees, faster transactions, enhanced security, and the ability to customise your experience. These advantages make it a convenient and secure option for financial transactions in this setting.
“With cryptocurrency payments, you can customise your yacht charter experience by requesting special services, add-ons and entertainment options.”
Digital voyage
TJB Super Yachts specialises in superyacht sales and charters. On its website, Chief Executive Tim Johnson states that customers are drawn to the speed and smoothness of using cryptocurrency. This appeal aligns with the allure of luxury boating and highlights the advantages of using digital currency.
“We have found that many of our clients like the freedom to book a last-minute superyacht charter.
“By using a cryptocurrency, they can send us their payment in a matter of moments, and be enjoying their charter within a few days. I am excited about being able to offer this fast, safe, and convenient payment option, and feel we are paving the way for more simplicity not only in superyacht bookings, but in the sales of yachts too.”
Charting a new course
Florida Yachts International (FYI) began accepting cryptocurrency in 2022, enabling customers to use digital currencies for purchases or to take advantage of its innovative lease-to-own program. The luxury boat dealer believes that cryptocurrency will soon emerge as the primary payment method in the industry.
“With the rise of cryptocurrency usage, there is no surprise that soon our wallets will be completely digital,” FYI tells customers on its website.
“The world will be our market selling houses, cars, and most importantly, superyachts!
“Bitcoin is real and here to stay, allowing you to make cash-like purchases digitally and avoid third parties interrupting transactions.
“After all, crypto is the future!”
Research indicates that digital currency is popular among young people. According to a survey of over 10,000 American adults by Pew Research, 43% of men aged 18 to 29 say they have used some form of cryptocurrency. Denison Yachting has noted this trend and says accepting cryptocurrency brings “the next generation of yacht customers” into the market.
Other firms offering their customers a cryptocurrency payment option include Greek yacht and catamaran charter Sailways and luxury yacht brokers SuperYachtsMonaco and YACHTZOO.
Crypto cruise
On the other side of the dock, luxury cruise liner Virgin Voyages is offering its customers the opportunity to purchase its annual pass using Bitcoin. The pass enables travellers to sail on any cruise itinerary from any departure location anytime for a year. Also included in the $120,000 (~£95,000) double occupancy package are a multitude of extras, including a sea terrace cabin with a private balcony, an invitation to an exclusive cocktail event, priority boarding, and a $100 bar tab for each cruise.
It’s the first cruise product offered by the liner that can be paid for by cryptocurrency. Commenting on the announcement, Virgin Group founder Richard Branson said: “I’ve always been a big believer in the power of travel and adventure to spark creativity and bring clarity. What started as a sought-after ‘work from sea’ concept with our season pass has evolved into something even more special.
“Sailors can jump aboard any of our ships across an endless variety of exciting destinations for an entire year. We’re offering unlimited opportunities for adventure in a way that has never been done in cruising before.”
Plain sailing
The integration of cryptocurrency into the yachting industry marks a significant shift towards modernity and convenience. With its ability to provide fast, secure, and low-cost payments, this digital revolution is not just a trend but a transformative movement that will reshape how luxury assets like superyachts are bought and chartered and how unforgettable experiences are booked.
In an industry known for its opulence and exclusivity, the integration of cryptocurrency represents a bold step towards a more streamlined and accessible future for yachting aficionados around the globe. As the popularity of digital currencies continues to grow, yachting is poised to sail smoothly into a future where cryptocurrency is the norm.
